A&M Bows By Inches

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Football is played on a 100 yard field, but it is many times a game of inches. On Saturday, in the 2nd round of the playoffs, A&M came out on the short side of what became a game of inches, losing at Concord Triopia, 12-7.

Concord had lost only game all season. In their eight wins, they only allowed one touchdown with the other seven games being shutouts. A&M had to keep Concord’s offense from getting an early lead and then be close enough late against a formidable defense to somehow tip the scales.

The Raiders kept Concord from an early lead. In fact it was the Raiders that drew first blood. A&M QB Curtis Ramsey ran 20 yards to pay dirt late in the 1st quarter. Reece Ade kicked the extra-point and A&M had checked that box.

The Raiders kept Concord from scoring in the 1st, but a sustained drive on the ground and a 1-yard TD run, got Concord within a point at half-time, trailing 7-6.

A turnover led to what would be the winning score for Concord. Ramsey completed  3-of-8 passes for 45 yards in the game, but one got away, an interception in the 3rd period. Concord had another long drive, 16 plays, that was capped by an 18-yard run to go ahead, 12-7, in the 3rd quarter.

The Raiders were competing late  in the 4th period with a chance to get the mild upset over Concord. Ramsey thought he had a 1st down, but the measurement left him short, giving the ball to Concord.

The Raiders forced a punt on the next possession, but a bad snap broke open the punt play and the Concord punter scrambled just enough for a 1st down. Concord kept pounding away and faced another 4th down. They picked up the 1st down. The faced another 4th down. But again, they just picked up the first down.

Concord was able to keep possession by inches, until it was too late for A&M to come back.
