Shelby Sacks Paris, Chucks Charleston

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — After getting dumped by Danville to start division play, Shelby County Sr. Legion took it out on their next two opponents. They sacked Paris, 13-3, and chucked Charleston, 10-3.

Paris jumped out to a 3-run lead in the 1st inning, but Shelby got a down payment on their come back in the bottom of the 1st, trailing 3-1. After the tough start, Shelby pitcher Ryne Floyd (Windsor) held Paris scoreless the rest of the way.

Shelby hitters put up their ownn 3-run rally in the 2nd and took the lead for good, 4-3. They stretched the lead to 5-3 in the 3rd, then bombed Paris in the 6th with a 5-run explosion. Leading 10-3 in the bottom of the 8th, Shelby delivered the coup de gras to Paris by scoring 3 runs and pulling the plug on the game with a 10-run fini.

As Ryne Floyd held Paris comatose after the 1st, the Shelby batters pounded out 15 hits, including five extra-base knocks. Shelby had three doubles from Nick Ferris (Stew-Stras), Luke Hatfield (Shelbyville), and Brady Walker. They got a pair of triples from Hatfield and Kyle Floyd (Windsor).

Four of the Shelby batters had multiple hits. Walker and Floyd both went 3-for-4. Walker scored three times and stole a base, while Floyd scored twice and drove in four runs. Hatfield was 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Ferris went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three. Ferris also walked twice.

After sacking Paris on Tuesday, Shelby County went back to Paris on Wednesday and chopped up Charleston, 10-3.

Seth Kline pitched and recorded the second straight complete game victory in two days for Shelby County. Kline allowed just three runs, six hits, and two walks in nine innings, while striking out 10.

It was a pitcher’s duel for three innings. Shelby finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd, 1-0. Charleston answered with two runs in the 4th and went up, 2-1.

That held up until the bottom of the 5th, when Shelby went on a 3-run rally, reclaiming the lead, 4-2.

Charleston made it a 1-run game again in the top of the 6th, 4-3. However, Shelby was on an offensive roll. They added to the 3-run rally in the 5th, with a 5-run bombardment in the 6th. That put Shelby up 9-3. Shelby scored another run in the 7th, scoring nine runs in three innings to give them the runaway win.  

Shelby smacked 10 hits in the game. Kyle Floyd and Nick Ferris had multiple hits. Floyd was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, including a triple. Ferris was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs. Both of Ferris’ hits were doubles.

Luke Hatfield (1-for-2) walked three times, had a triple, scored twice and drove in three runs. Brady Walker (1-for-5) hit a double, scored, and drove in two more runs.

Shelby County Sr. legion (28-14, 2-1 Division) was to play Thursday against Mattoon at 5 p.m. in Paris.
