SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville shot 54% in the 1st half when they knocked off Meridian on Tuesday. On Friday they couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean and Darin Breeden had to emerge from a phone booth to push the Rams past Argenta, 49-42.
Argenta opened the game with a 12-6 run, getting six field goals to Shelby’s two. Eller and McHood scored twice for AO, while the Rams got solo buckets from Brody Bence and Tucker Schwengel. Breeden was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made 2-of-3 to help the sputtering Ram offense.
The 2nd wasn’t much better for the Rams, as they scored three times to AO’s four. The Rams got another solo bucket from Bence, a two from reserve forward Luke McConnell and a triple from Nate Standerfer. AO also had a pair of solo twos and a trey from Eller to match the rams out-put, but McHood added a trey to put the Bombers up by nine at the break, 22-13.
The complexion of the game changed when the Rams came out of the locker room. The Rams would go on a 36-20 run in the2nd half to wrest the game away from the Bombers.
Spencer Shadwell scored all 12 of his points in the 2nd half and got started in the 3rd. Shadwell recorded a deuce sandwich with a creamy 3-point middle for 7 of his 12. And 7 of the Rams 19 point period.
Standerfer cashed in on another three and picked up the second 3-point foul by the Bombers. Standerfer buried all three free throws to score 6 of his 9 points in the period. Bence also was more effective in the 3rd, scoring twice, then getting to the line for the first time in the game and going automatic for 6 of his 14 points in the quarter.
AO got 7 of their 9 points in the quarter from Eller and two free throws from Boomer. The Ram 19-9 run put them up one heading into crunch time, 32-31.
AO regained the lead early in the 4th, as Witts scored 6 of his 10 points in the 4th and Eller nailed his third trey. Bence scored twice and Shadwell made his second 3-pointer, but down the stretch it was Breeden donned his cape that turned the tide.
Breeden sank a triple to tie the game. He then scored on a jumper and on a put back and the Rams were up. Shadwell added a pair of free throws and the Rams pulled out a game that started pretty ugly.
Shelby shot just 15% in the 1st period and just 21% in the 2nd, 18.5% for the half.
One place the Rams shot well was at the free throw line. They shot 10-of-12 (83%), while AO shot just 3-of-4 (75%), a 7-point advantage at the line for the Rams in a 7-point win.
Shelbyville went to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the Okaw conference. Shelby plays at Sullivan on Tuesday.
