Altamont Handles Hornets
Like the Grinch who stole Christmas, Altamont came to Cowden on Tuesday and started the Hornets Christmas break by stealing their cheer, 73-42.
From the opening tip-off it was all Altamont, as not a single Hornet got into double figures and the Hornet 3-point barrage never got started. Cowden-Herrick made 14 threes in their last game against Ramsey in the St. Elmo Tournament. They made just four against Altamont.
Point gurad Jalen Hovis jumped center against center broian Suckow to start the game. It was a miss match and Altamont got the opening tip and a foul in the post on the first play. Suckow gave the Indians a 2-0 lead at the line. Tyler Day dished to Zach Miller on the block and he answered for a 2-2 tie.
A long two at the Altamont end made it 4-2 and the Indians were off on a 12-0 run. The Hornets trailed 14-2 and never seriously challenged after that. Seven points was as close as they would get, when Jalen Hovis made a rare trey with 2:00 to play in the first to cut the Altamont lead to 17-10.
Altamont went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:00 to lead 28-10 two minutes into the second. It was 32-14 with 2:30 left in the second, when Colton Heiserman hit from downtown to cut it to a 15 point margin. That was too close for Coach Doug Hill and he called time-out and read the Indians the riot act for not defending the arc. They got the message. They only allowed one more three after that, a key to keeping the Hornets from mounting a comeback.
Blake faulkner hit a three with 20 second left in the half to cut the 19-point lead to 16 points, 38-22. Altamont was going to play for one shot after that, but Heiserman tipped the ball away into the back court and he and the Indian point guard played bulldog going after it as the buzzer sounded.
The 16-point lead at the break became a 22-point lead heading into the fourth, 55-33. If that wasn't enough, the Indians kept starters in until they had a 30-point lead with just 2:44 to play and they ended up doubling up the Hornets in the final frame, despite being prohibitively ahead.
Cowden-Herrick will see what's left under the tree Christmas morning, then head to the Dieterich Tournament on Monday.
