Athletes Of The Week-Martin, Applegate, Powers

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Daily Union Athletes of the Week pushed their program deeper into the postseason.

Junior Drennian Martin, senior Seth Applegate, and freshman Morgan Powers pushed the Rams on to sectional next Saturday with standout performances at the Carlinville Regional.

Martin ran a time of 15:15 at regional, placing 14th overall and team 13th. Martin was the fourth Ram scorer and earned a regional medal

Applegate crossed the finish line just five seconds later (16:00), placing 15th overall and team 14th. As the fifth and final Ram scorer, Applegate set the Ram score at 49 points. Applegate also finished in the Top 15 and earned a regional medal, meaning all five Ram scorers earned medals.

Freshman Morgan Powers. Powers achieved her goal this year of advancing to sectional. Powers finished 25th  at regional, overall, in a time of 20:27.

Drennian Martin is the son of Charlie Martin of Shelbyville. Seth Applegate is the son of Brian and Debbie Applegate of Shelbyville. Morgan Powers is the daughter of Tim and Carol Powers of Shelbyville.

    High schools from over the state of Illinois made their way down for the first day of the girls state track meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

    Defending class 1A champion Central A&M sent 12 total athletes to the meet this season, and started this years’ girls track meet off well by winning 6 events individually and 1 team race.
