Moulton Sweeps Stew-Stras; Mixed Invite Results

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelby Moulton volleyball was able to get a sweep of Stew-Stras after the Shelby Invite a week ago, where the Rams had mixed results from their own invite.

Ram 7th lost two of three matches at the invite, losing to Taylorville, 7-25, 23-25, to Tolono, 20-25, 13-25, but beating Paris Mayo, 25-16, 28-30, 15-10. Ram 8th won two of three matches at the invite. They beat Taylorville, 25-16, 25-15, Paris Mayo, 25-12, 25-5, but lost to Tolono, 17-25, 25-20, 9-15. Shelby 7th beat Stew-Stras, 14-25, 25-13, 26-24, while Shelby 8th dominated, 25-6, 25-8.

Shelby 7th had a tough day at the invite.

"We started out the day pretty rough, really struggling on serve receive and committing way too many unforced errors," said Ram 7th coach Brittany Pierce. "We did not play well as a team and broke down mentally at several points early in the day. We did improve as the day went on, though, and really tried to do the right things against Paris-Mayo. Again, these girls showed that they are capable

Shelby 8th rolled early, but couldn't finish against Tolono.

"Overall, this was a pretty good day for us, "said Ram 8th coach Lisa Peifer. "We executed most of the day and did a nice job of playing under control. The Tolono match was tough, because we did the right thing most of the time, but the few lapses we had were enough to let the match slip away. They were undefeated and raelly wanted our match a lot. They played with enthusiasm, where we didn't. These girls have had so much success that sometimes they forget to play hard all the time and just wait for teams to make mistakes. That lack of focus can put us in panic mode. We are good, but could be better."

On Tuesday, Ram 7th had to come back against Stew-Stras and then win a barn-burner.

"This was a very hard-fought match," said Coach Pierce. "We started out very slow and unenthused, allowing Stew-Stras an early lead. We simply had entirely too many unforced errors in game 1.

"We bounced back in game 2 and did an excellent job at the service line, allowing us to take control early and build a lead. Game 3 seemed to be back and forth early and then we allowed Stew-Stras a decent-sized lead by not controlling our side of the net. The girls fought back hard with all they had, though. I am very proud of them pulling out this match."
