SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Cowden-Herrick 8th grade basketball will play for the Beecher City 1A Regional title on Thursday night against host Beecher City, after beating Pana Sacred Heart in the semifinal on Monday, 41-26.
The Cowden-Herrick 7th grade led by Konner Blackerby went to the 7A Regional Championship before bowing out. Now the C-H 8th grade, led by Konner Blackerby (14 points) is playing in the 8A Regional Championship.
The Hornets emerged from a defensive 1st period with the only scores in the first 6:00, coming from solo 3-pointers from Noah Sandiford and Kyle Black, 6-0 Hornets. Action picked up in the 2nd as St. Pat's and C-H put up 19 points together.
Austin Gruber scored twice for Pana and Adam Miller and Wade McMillen scored once each. McMillen added a free throw for 9 PSH points. C-H did one better.
Blackerby and Micah Sandiford scored once, each and Westen Giles had a two and 1-of-2 at the line. The difference in the period was Black's second 3-pointer of the game giving C-H a 7-point at the break, 16-9.
The Hornets upped the ante in the 3rd with a 13-5 run. Blackerby was off the hook, scoring twice inside the arc and twice beyond the bow. Giles scored and Black added 1-of-2 at the line. Pana got just solo buckets from Miller and Gruber and 1-of-2 from the line from Gruber.
Cowden-Herrick was up by 15 to start the final 6:00. St. Pat's had their best quaretr of the night, but the Hornets matched them and held on to the double-digit lead at the buzzer.
Trexler hit a three for Pana, Gruber scored twice and Miller and McMillen both made 2-of-2 at the line. Ethan Harbert made 1-of-2 for an even dozen.
Westen Giles and Micah Sandiford led C-H down the stretch with two scores, each. The rest of their dozen came at the line. Blackerby made 2-of-2, Noah Sandiford 1-of-2, and Black 1-of-4.
Beecher City beat Brownstown 45-23 in the other semi to send them to Thursday's 6 p.m. final
