SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Central A&M (9-1) will take on another successful program Saturday in round 2 of the IHSA football playoffs, playing a 2-time state champion and 2-time state runner-up Concord Triopia (9-1).
Concord Triopia lost to one of their conference foes last year (’11) in the quarterfinals. A&M lost to Tuscola in round 1 last year (’11).
Concord may have the edge on paper, but it should be a competitive game between equals that could go either way.
Last week in round 1, Concord had a player score four TDs, Derrek Schone on 123 yards. A&M had a player score four TDs on 132 yards, Zack Ballinger.
Concord has an enrollment of 279. A&M has an enrollment of 280. Concord’s scoring averages are 42.1 points for and 5.2 against for a plus 36.9 points. A&M’s scoring averages are 42.1 for and 19.7 points against for a plus 22.4 points.
Concord had one close game all season, a loss to top-seeded Camp Point Central 22-33. Concord beat one team 30-8 and their other eight games, including last week in round 1, were all shutouts.
A&M has had to compete in big games, beating Tolono, 47-41, and losing to Maroa, 39-36. Every other game was a double-digit win.
Concord scores and has great defense. If A&M can stay in the game early, make a close game of it, and put pressure on Concord, it could go in the Raiders’ favor.
