SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
After suffering a 2-point defeat to start the Highland Tourney and dropping out of the Class A Top 10, the CHBC Hornets ran the table to get to the consolation championship and beat the home team to win that game as well, 57-48.
CHBC was led by their all-state and 1st team all-tourney leader Micah Jones. Jones scored a game-high 28 points, scoring 10 time from the field, including one triple, and making 7-of-11 at the line.
Autumn Riley was back in double figures, scoring 10 points and Ava Paruleski had nine, making 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
The Hornets took a 6-point lead with a up tempo 18-point 1st period. The 2nd quarter, Highland played the Hornets even, so CHBC had to be content with a 6-point lead at the break, 32-26.
Highland challenged in the 3rd and got the lead down to just three points heading in crunch time, 44-41.
But with Jones on the floor, a close game goes the Hornets’ way 90% of the time. She led CHC to a 13-7 run in the final 8:00 and they pulled away from the host team.
CHBC shot just 64% at the line to Highland’s 80%. But the Hornets got to the stripe more times and they still came away with a 4-point advantage at the line.
CHBC had a 5-point advantage from the floor, despite Highland having one more triple. That plus drawing fouls and getting to the line gave CHBC the edge for the win.
CHBC (14-5) returns to NTC action on Monday, playing Neoga.
