SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
The Stew-Stras Comets came to Okaw Valley on Tuesday and limited the Timberwolves leading scorers, while getting big contributions down low, out top and off the bench in the, 76-53, win.
Okaw Valley had balanced scoring, but just one player in double figures. Hunter Perrine led the way with 12 points, followed by Peyton Hagerman with nine, Wes Thompson with eight, Garrett Sparks with eight, Joe Jeffers with seven and Wil Craig with seven.
Stew-Stras, however, had three players in double figures. They got a 22-point performance from Justin Fulk inside, a 21-point performance from Brandon Helmuth outside, and a boost from Jonathan Luce off the bench with 13 points, nine of which came in the 2nd period, 23-13, Comet run.
The Comets only got a couple of their patented 3s in the first, from Helmuth and Jason Fry, but Fulk scored three times inside. Jason Becker and Luce also got on the board early for 16 points.
Okaw matched that output with a pair of scores from Hunter Perrine, who would prove to be Okaw’s leading scorer. Joe Jeffers also scored twice, while Garrett Sparks, Peyton Hagerman and Colton Bush joined in with solo twos.
The game was on, but in the 2nd Stew-Stras got separation. Helmuth hit his first two of four 3-pointers. Luce came off the bench and was unstoppable. He scored four times from the floor and completed a 3-point play at the line. That was enough to out-score the whole Okaw team in the priod. Becker scored twice and Fulk and Bryse Bugger scored once to cap the 23-point period.
Okaw couldn’t keep up. Hagerman scored twice, with a deuce and a trey, but then he was not much of a factor. Perrine, Jeffers and Wil Craig had just solo scores and Garrett Sparks made a pair of free throws. The 23-13 run, put Okaw down by ten at the break, 39-29.
The 3rd period left the Comet margin about the same, thanks to Fulk. Okaw couldn’t stop the Comets inside. They have been able to against other teams.
, despite their size deficit, but Fulk and Luce were just too strong.
Fulk made five field goals in the 3rd for 10 of 11 of the Comet points. Helmuth split a pair at the line for the other point.
Okaw got a deuce and a trey from Wes Thompson in the 3rd, but, again, just solo buckets from Sparks and Perrine and 1-of-2 at the stripe from Jeffers.
Heading into the 4th it was an 11-point Stew-Stras lead with the game still in the balance. Stew-Stras threw it out of balance with a 26-14 run for the tape.
Fulk had a couple of scores and Helmuth got to the line. Helmuth made two free throws, then had a deuce. He followed that with a triple and got to the line two more times. Helmuth made all four foul shots and capped the late run with 11 of his 21 points in crunch time, making 6-of-6 at the line.
Ben Helton and Dylan Roley came off the bench for a couple of scores, each and Luce took a bow with one more bucket.
Nobody got off late for Okaw. Thompson hit another triple, but that was it. Sparks and Hagerman had a couple of solo deuces, but that was it. Perrine emerged as the leading Okaw scorer with a bucket and a pair of free throws late. Craig also had a bucket and 1-of-2 at the line.
