Fatal Accident On Rt. 16

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Illinois State Police Pesotum, District 10, following preliminary information, reported a fatal accident on Route 16 just east of Shelbyville on Tuesday night, October 30, at 6:38 p.m.

Mark A. Reedy 43 of Shelbyville, the driver of a 1985 White Chevrolet pickup truck (Unit 2), was killed as a result of the crash. He was not wearing a  seatbelt and was ejected. He had no passengers. The other vehicle (Unit 1), a 2001 Red Chevrolet Tahoe,  was driven by Robert J. Smithson 46 of Shelbyville with two passengers in the vehicle. They were Elliott W. Smithson, 16, Shelbyville and Isaac J. Smithson, 8, Shelbyville. According to the Illinois State Police report, Robert Smithson, Elliott Smithson, and Isaac Smithson were wearing seatbelts and were uninjured.

All subjects were transported to Shelby Memorial Hospital.

According the Illinois State Police report, Reedy was westbound on IL Rt. 16. and his vehicle was struck at the intersection of Shelby CR 2200 E.

Also according to the report, Unit 1 was stopped at a stop sign, northbound on Shelby CR 2200 E, just south of the IL Rt. 16 intersection. Unit 2 was traveling westbound on IL Rt. 16 at CR 2200 E. The driver of Unit 1 proceeded north through the intersection, failing to yield to Unit 2. The front fender of Unit 1 struck the rear driver side tire of Unit 2. Unit 2 spun in a counter-clockwise rotation and overturned. The driver of Unit 2 was ejected. The driver of Unit 2 was killed as a result of the crash.   

According to the Illinois State Police report, Unit 1 driver was charged for Failure To Yield at Intersection.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
