Newlin Receives 55 Years

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — A Herrick man was sentenced to 55 years for his part in the shooting death of the man he shared a home with in December.

Wayne D. Newlin, 53, appeared before Judge Michael Kiley in Shelby County Circuit Court on Friday, November 9, for his sentencing hearing. Newlin was found guilty in a jury trial on September 27, on the charge of First Degree Murder-Accountability in the death of Jeremy Morgan of Herrick. Newlin provided the weapon used and devised the plan with Michael Pease to carry out the murder, Pease of Pana, also charged with First Degree Murder, pled guilty to his charge in July. He is currently serving a 45 -year sentence in the Department of Corrections.

After a contested sentencing hearing where State's Attorney Deborah Riley asked for a sentence of 65 years in the Department of Corrections, Judge Kiley sentenced the defendant to 55 years in the Department of Corrections. Newlin will serve 100 peercent of the sentence, according to Riley.

Kiley also heard statements from Newlin's brother Steven regarding Newlin's character, and victim impact statements from widow Samantha Morgan and father Bob Morgan before pronouncing sentence.

"I am happy that I could provide some closure to the victim's family and Shelby County residents with a guilty verdict at trial and a sentence to the Department of Corrections that will likely result in Mr. Newlin never being allowed to be a free man again," Riley said.

Newlin was represented by Conflict Public Defender Walter B. Lookofsky.
