SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Cowden remembered one their police officers Friday who died in the line of duty two years ago to the day with a special memorial dedication ceremony.
Signs have been erected at the north and south edges of Cowden on Route 128 to designate the Officer Jeremy Hubbard Memorial Highway.
Hubbard, a part time sheriff’s deputy for Effingham County and a part time police officer for the village of Cowden for almost three years, died in a high speed chase on Route 128 on August 10, 2010.
During the ceremony, State Senator Kyle McCarter, Hubbard’s widow Trisha, and Effingham County Sheriff John Monnet each spoke about Hubbard’s character and dedication to his job.
“This is a wonderful thing to be able to do today,” McCarter said of the dedication of the signs. “The designation and sign will remind all of us of the dedicated service and sacrifice that Officer Hubbard made for Illinois.”
Trisha Hubbard said that she had seen other memorial signs dedicated to fallen officers and knew she wanted one for her husband’s memory.
“I talked to Senator McCarter about it (the signs) and he was a big help,” Hubbard said.
Sheriff John Monnet spoke about how officers sacrifice for their service to others.
“We (officers) don’t want to be forgotten,” said Monnet. “As long as God has given us a mind, we have a memory. We have a memory to remember and that can’t be taken away. We’re here today to remember Jeremy. He was willing to sacrifice to the upmost, which he did.”
Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Illlinois State Police, Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Cowden Police, Pontiac Police, and Moweaqua Police.
