Shelbyville Man’s Death Ruled Accidental

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — A Shelbyville man’s death was ruled accidental by a coroner’s jury Tuesday.

Mark A. Reedy, 43, died in a two-vehicle accident on the evening of October 30.

Illinois State Trooper Ross Drennan presented his report of the accident to Shelby County Coronor Brian Green and the six member jury.

An inquest determines the manner and cause of a death.

According to Drennan’s account, Reedy was westbound on Route 16 east of Shelbyville. A second vehicle driven by Robert Smithson was northbound on 2200E and attempted to cross the intersection with Route 16 when he struck the rear driver’s side of Reedy’s pickup truck. Reedy’s truck spun counterclockwise  before rolling over several times and landing on its top.

Reedy, who was not seatbelted, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

“According to Smithson, he did stop (before entering the intersection), but it’s inconclusive as to whether he did or not,” Drennan said. “Smithson stated he did not see Reedy before proceeding through the intersection. I do not know the reason for that.”

Smithson’s vehicle came to rest facing west on Route 16. Smithson and his two sons were seatbelted in the vehicle and were not injured.

Drennan said Smithson did not seem impaired from alcohol or narcotics. He admitted to Drennan that he had a beer with dinner and was on blood pressure medicine. Smithson passed all field sobriety tests. Smithson was also tested at Shelby Memorial Hospital and blood test returned a .000 reading for blood alcohol and negative for narcotics. Only blood pressure medication was found in his system.

“In my opinion, Smithson made a human error. In my opinion, he was not paying attention when he crossed the intersection,” Drennan said. “I believe he thought it was clear and safe to cross.”

Drennan added that other witnesses who were northbound on 2200E south of the intersection did not see the accident, but from a distance saw the lights from Reedy’s vehicle spinning and said they thought it was farm equipment in the roadway. They said they were confused by it.

Reedy’s body was taken to Bloomington and was examined by Dr. Scott Denton. Autopsy revealed that Reedy suffered multiple injuries to his head, neck and chest, including a cervical fracture and several areas of hemorrhaging. His blood alcohol was negative.

The jury concluded that Reedy died from the injuries he sustained when he was ejected from the vehicle and ruled the death accidental.
