SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Tropical storm Isaac dropped between three and four inches of rain over the weekend throughout Shelby County, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.
The NWS received reports from Shelbyville at 3.86 inches; 2 miles south of Moweaqua at 3.14 inches; Windsor at 3.15 inches; and 4 miles northwest of Neoga at 3.79 inches.
“That’s pretty common across the central Illinois area of 2 to 5 inches,” said Chuck Schaffer, meteorologist at the NWS in Lincoln.
Although Isaac came through the Shelby County area quietly, other places in the state reported some tornadoes with minor damage.
A tornado near Franklin in Morgan County touched down briefly Friday evening, and areas north of Peoria reported brief tornadoes late Saturday morning.
“Flooding has not been a problem because the ground is very dry and soaked it right up,” Schaffer said.
The rain did little in helping the drought situation which has plagued the Midwest this summer. Rainfalls have been very scattered throughout the area in recent weeks.
“Central Illinois has had less than one-half its normal rainfall during the summer,” Schaffer said. “It was good that we got a tropical system to give widespread area rain. It gave a break in the drought.”
Schaffer added that there are several chances of more rain this week and temperatures will remain at near normal to slightly above normal.
He added that there is a front coming next week and that there is a cool down behind it.
