SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Hospital staff greeted and guided a steady flow of visitors through the new facilities of the Shelby Physicians Center and the hospital’s Wildflower Cafe during an open house Thursday evening.
The year-long renovation project was completed and doctors have moved into their new offices and suites during April and May.
“We added 2500 square feet just to this building (clinic),” said Shelby Memorial Hospital CFO Phil Miller. “It was a $5 million project including the new cafeteria.
The project also includes the addition of a 3-story freight elevator and loading dock located between the clinic and the hospital.
“I’m really please to be done,” said Shelby Memorial Hospital CEO Marilyn Sears. “I hope everybody like it. It’s been a long time coming. The medical offices have been needing a makeover for a long time.”
In January 2011, doctor’s offices were moved from the clinic to temporary trailers so that patients could continue to be cared for. Work on the clinic building began in March 2011 with the workers completely gutting the building while saving the exterior.
“The community built the clinic in the ‘70s and we thought we should save part of it (the building),” Sears said. “It is built to be modified for what the future may hold.”
A drive-up has been included in the landscaping design for the clinic.
Sears added that the doctors had a part in designing their offices. The furnishing of the offices are new or nearly new. Doctors Urbano Dauz and Virginia Dauz, Doris Bowers, David Oligschlaeger, Mark Vasco, Das Gurujal, Arnold Agapito, and Jagan Bokka, and physicians assistants Gary Hayden, Jason Shaver, and Hannah Doyle are all located in the center.
The common waiting area has fresh color paint and flower artwork that also has a sound softening effect for the area.
The flower artwork theme continue onto the second floor of the hospital where the Wildflower Cafe is located.
“The employees made suggestions for the cafeteria name and voted on it. There were over 100 suggestions,” Miller said.
The cafeteria provides a more updated facility to serve both patients and visitors and is conveniently located near patient rooms. The older cafeteria was located in the basement of the hospital.
The cafe can seat up to 50 in a brightly colored area. The equipment and serving are is stainless steel.
Sears noted that the furnishing for the clinic and the cafeteria were funded in part by the Geneva Buesking estate.
