Shelbyville Announces a $625,000 Grant to International Paper for Expansion

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Shelbyville Mayor Roy Shuff and International Paper (IP) Plant Manager Bob Eades announced a $625,000 grant from the city to IP for expansion of the Shelbyville plant.

“Today, I am pleased to announce an expansion of our Shelbyville facility,” said Eades.  “We have already begun construction on a 150,000 square foot addition that will house our new Print Center.”

Mayor Shuff announced a grant of $625,000 from the city to be used for the purchase of equipment necessary for this expansion project.

“These funds were made available by the liquidation of the city’s Revolving Loan Fund,” said Shuff.  “After careful consideration by the city council it was determined that providing these funds to International Paper, our community’s largest employer, would help bring this exciting and welcome expansion to Shelbyville.”

Shuff went on to talk about how valuable IP is to Shelbyville.

“This facility employs approximately 800 people providing millions of dollars in business to our local vendors and contributing thousands of dollars  to our city, county, school districts and other entities each year in property taxes,” continued Shuff.  “We are grateful to them for expanding their operation here.”

Eades said altogether this will be a $20 million dollar project.

“This grant was instrumental in helping to justify the project,” said Eades.  “We certainly appreciate the city and everything they have done for us.”

Eades said another huge factor in justifying this project to IP was the quality of the local employees.

“The one thing I would like to highlight is the quality of the employees we have at this facility.  We can talk about the business climate in Illinois and we all know what that is like, but it is the quality of the people, the and the quality of the community that gets these projects done.”

This deal was facilitated by State Senator Kyle McCarter (R-51st District) and the office of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (IDCEO).

Deputy Director of the IDCEO Brian Selinger said this is a very important deal.

“This is something our agency was excited to work in close collaboration with the city of Shelbyville,” said Selinger.  “This is an important expansion project that would bring much needed jobs to this Central Illinois area.”

Eades said the expansion of their operation is the culmination of 5 years of planning and is a testament of International Paper’s commitment to the Shelbyville community, their facility and employees.

“Throughout our 38 years of operation in this community, International Paper and Shelbyville have worked well together.”
