SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Jeremy Jokisch, representing the Scarecrow Daze committee, told the Shelbyville City Council Monday evening that the group is planning to bring the fall event back to the downtown area.
Jokisch requested street closures for the first blocks of North Walnut, North Broadway, North Morgan, North Washington, and a partial block of South Broadway to allow room for vendors and entertainment. He also request use of the east city parking lot for the tent and inflables.
“We want to bring Scarecrow Daze back downtown to benefit the merchants,” Jokisch said.
The event is set for Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, with events at Forest Park on Friday evening and all other events downtown on Saturday.
The parade on Saturday is tentatively planned to begin at Forest Park and run the usual parade route backwards, bringing everything back downtown.
Some of the events include a car show, quilt show, beer-tasting, hot dog eating contest, and a pumpkin smashing “Angry Birds” contest.
Council member Bill Shoaff suggested that Jokisch go over the street plans with Police Chief David Tallman and return at the next council meeting for approval.
Mayor Roy Shuff also told him that paperwork needs to be completed for the beer tent for approval at the September 4 meeting.
City Engineer Alan Spesard presented the bids for the North 9th Street drainage project. Low bidders were Stephens Concrete of Decatur for manholes and inlets, covers and grates; Energy Culvert Company of Energy IL for storm sewer pipe; and Metal Culverts of Missouri for pipe culverts. Bids totaled $41,596.79 and is covered by grants. The projects were estimated at $47,952.
Shoaff reported that two other companies were contacted to look at the water tower maintenance. A presentation was made to the council by another company earlier this month.
Shoaff also reported problems with one of the pumps at the sewer lift station at P&H. He suggested that the 10-year-old pump be rebuilt
“A new one would cost $10,000, but we can get it rebuilt for $5,000,” Shoaff said.
Before adjourning the meeting, Mayor Roy Shuff expressed his appreciation for the support given him during his illness.
“I would like to continue to serve. I would like to finish out my term as mayor, but whatever the Lord has in store for me,” Shuff said.
