SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelby CountyAirport was buzzing Sunday with remote controlled aircraft of all kinds.
The annual Bob Tait Memorial Fly-In sponsored by the Tri-County RC Club brought in between 30 and 40 crafts, featuring planes of all sizes, helicopters, and even Iron Man.
The local fly-in is named for local enthusiast Bob Tait who passed away in 2007.
“Bob was a member of the club for several years and a great World War II veteran. This is a way to honor him,” said Terry Claypool, president of the club.
Tait’s love for planes came early in his life, according to his daughter Patti Hendrickson and son David. When he joined the service he was given a choice as a gunman on the ground or a gunman in the rear of a plane. He chose the plane.
“We saw the war riding backward,” said David.
When Tait came home from the war, he grew his hobby of remote controlled planes.
“Dad had 30 or 40 planes over the years. The basement was full of them,” said Patti. “Dave has all of dad’s planes.”
David Tait lives in the Seattle, WA, area. Patti Hendrickson and her husband Milton live in Shelbyville.
The RC club travels throughout the area introducing the hobby to other people through the fly-ins.
“Almost every town has a club. This is a lifestyle hobby,” Patti said. “These guys are serious and want to bring others into it, too.”
