‘Clear!’

Police Train for Shooting Scenario

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — School may be out for students over the holidays, but school was in session for several law enforcement agencies as they roamed the halls at Shelbyville High School Thursday looking for a “shooter.”

The exercise was part of an “active shooter” training by the Illinois State Police and hosted by the Shelbyville Police Department.

“We have trainings at different times,” said Shelbyville Police Chief David Tallman. “We picked this time to have a training because the school would be empty over the holidays.”

The training included classroom time and practical sessions on the latest techniques for clearing the building, doing room by room searches, and clearing the hallways and stairwells safely and quickly for possible threats.

“The schools have emergency plans in place and they make us aware of a problem,” Tallman said.

Teaching the class was ISP Trooper Jeff Denning. Officers from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Shelbyville Police Department, Findlay Police Department and Windsor Police Department participated in the training.
