SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
The gusty winds at Thursday night’s Shelbyville High School Homecoming rally soon turned the traditional pep rally into a dangerous situation. No sooner had the students and facility lit the huge bonfire the high winds picked up and helped the fire get out of control. The Shelbyville Fire Protection District (SFPD) was called and they in turn asked Tower Hill for mutual aid to help get the flames back under control.
The huge crowd attending the event was forced to retreat and in fact, many people left during the big fire. The fear was that the large flaming embers that were flying out of the fire into the wind westward toward homes, businesses and even back towards the school. The football field was at one time was enveloped in thick gray smoke.
However the firemen eventually got the fire knocked down and there were no reports of injuries or any other fires as a result.
SFPD engineer Perk Wilson said that department was called out at 9:10 p.m. and was back at the station at 11 p.m.
