SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelby scored more precious medals at the Class A Boys State Track Meet Finals on Saturday.
Shelbyville had four entries at State and three of them brought home medals. Stew-Stras sent three entries to State and two scored medals. Central A&M sent one athkete to State and he earned a medal.
Shelbyville's distance runners were heroic in their performance from sectional to the state finals. Cory Powers, Seth Applegate, Drennian Martin and Myles Foor upset Meridian at sectional to claim the sectional crown, with a time of 8:27, just one second off their personal best.
They went to State and with sectional 2-mile champ Alex Matlock, not running until Saturday, substituted in for Applegate in the prelims. The Rams knocked nine seconds off their PR and ran a 8:15.23, running a close 2nd in their heat.
Their time was good enough to put them into the finals. Matlock gave up running in the 2-mile to give the 4x8 the best chance of earning a medal. The Rams went after it in the finals. They bested their PR again, this time by 5.13 seconds, running a 8:10.01 and grabbing an 8th place medal. All four will return next year.
Brice Griesemer, the Ram senior thrower, threw a qualifying distance (49-3) at sectional and made his senior run to State in the shot put. In the prelims, Griesemer threw 49 feet, 3 inches again and qualified for the finals. His throw of 49-3 stood up omn Saturday and he finished his prep career with a 9th place state medal.
Luke Hatfield is a 2-sport athlete for the Rams. His #1 sport is baseball, where he has been the RBI leader the last three years. He also is the Okaw Valley Conference pole vault champ the last three years.
This year, Hatfield, on a brand new pole qualified for state as the sectional runner-up, clearing 13-6. In prelims at State Hatfield went 13-6 again and made it to finals. His height stood up on Saturday and Hatfield claimed another kudo, a 9th place state medal.
Alex Baumgarten, the 20011 state runner-up in the long jump, earned a final trip to State. He emerged from the sectional as the champ, leaping 21 feet, 5 inches. At State prelims, Baumgarten jumped 22 feet, 4.5 inches. His leap placed him 3rd in the finals and it stood up on Saturday to claim that 3rd place medal.
Sophomore Jason Fry of Stew-Stras qualified for State in both the shot and the discus. He was out-distanced in the shot but made finals in the discus, throwing 152 feet, 2 inches. That throw stood up through the finals and Fry brought home a 8th place state medal.
The final Shelby Area athlete to medal was Central A&M's senior leaper Kolten Postin. Postin was the sectional champ, clearnig 6-5. At the state prelims, Postin scaled a quaifying 6-1 and advanced to finals. At finals, Postin cleared 6 feet, 4 inches and earned a 6th place medal.
