Shelby School Board Looks to Increase Levy

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelbyville School Board is looking to increase the 2012 tax levy by $300,000 more than that 2011 levy.

The proposed increase includes a 7.56 percent over last year’s extension resulting in the the need for a Truth in Taxation hearing, which is set for December 20.

The increase reflects 4.56 percent in new property as well as a 3 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). It also includes adjustments to Tort fund and bond and interest on the QZAB funds used for improvements at Moulton Middle School.

“The increase is subject to CPI and will take care of the QZAB for next year,” said Superintendent Denise Bence.

Last year’s levy was $4.224 million. The proposed levy is $4.553 million.

Bence also reported to the board that the district has been chosen to receive a $20,000 grant from the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, in an action by State Representative Brad Halbrook.

“This money can only be used on capital improvements. We’d like to replace the wood doors at the High School,” Bence said.

In addition the district has the opportunity to receive an EPA rebate worth $25-$30,000 if they would replace an old bus with a fuel efficient bus such as propane-powered. No action was taken on the matter.

The board also took no action on the new bus driver job description presented. They will await input from the UAW.

In action as a result of executive session, the board:

- Approved Lisa Peifer as High School volleyball coach

- Approved Chris Mosley as Jr. High head track coach

- Approved the contract extension of Karen Miller as Director of Special Education.
