SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Shelby County ended its 2010 year more than $12,000 over its fundraising goal.
Shelby County raised $67,660.77. This year’s goal was $55,000.
The total was over $64,000 at the end of the Relay event on August 7. Continued fundraising and donations bumped the total up an additional $3000.
Last year 27 teams raised over $68,000.
“We did this with 10 less teams this year. Think what we could do with more teams,” said co-chair Kathy Storm. She added that the committee hopes there will be more teams next year to raise the funds even higher.
“This is not just a Shelbyville event. It’s for all of Shelby County. We would like to see more teams from the rest of the county,” Storm said.
Teams hold fundraisers throughout the year as they compete against each other for various level recognitions.
This year’s top team was “Many Returns” from the Shelbyville First United Methodist Church who raised nearly $6800.
Other top teams were “Fishers for a Cure” at over $6500 and “Team Turbo” at over $6300.
“It’s not too early to think about next year,” said American Cancer Society staff member Lesa Brandt. Brandt encouraged team signups and early fundraising.
Next year’s event is set for August 5-6. The overnight Relay reflects the journey a cancer victim walks from diagnosis to remission.
Donations may be designated to a specific service of the ACS or to a specific cancer research.
Services include a free wig bank, “Look Good, Feel Good program” and “Road to Recovery”.
